Running In Kinky Boots!

Kinky Boots:

  1.  boots (or run shoes) having kinks or twists… like my Brooks Adrenaline’s
  2.  a great film and Broadway musical

Ok maybe those aren’t textbook definitions but tonight they fit!

As I wrote the other day, I’ve been having trouble with my run shoes. My newest purchase, the Brooks Adrenaline, felt good but then my toe was rubbing really badly. It was my first run in them and I had put so much hope into them working out because I’ve run in Brooks before and they felt the best out of the 15 shoes I must have tried on! I’m not sure if it was me feeling like all my hope in that one Brooks basket had flown away or the fact that I’m on Day 5 of my vegan challenge, but I pretty much lost it tonight.

finding the right shoe is so tough!

In my not-so-finest moment this evening, I decided three things:  I’m NOT running tonight. I’m NOT staying on this vegan diet. And I’m taking those Brooks BACK! And I don’t know exactly how it all happened but I slowly ended up picking up all those comments off the floor and taking all of those things back.

It started with the shoes. It’s such a pain a pain to head across town in traffic at the end of the day to return shoes. And if I’m not going to return them tonight, why not try them again? As my better half tried to helpfully suggest tonight “Well if they’re just rubbing in one spot but everything else is fine, why not keep them? It’s not like you have better options right now.” I instantly recognized this as good and/or thoughtful advice and expressed my thanks. Wait… no, that’s not right… oh yes, what I actually said was something rude and snarky because I was having a jerk fest moment. But 5 minutes LATER I recognized this as good and/or thoughtful advice, said thanks, got my Brooks, and got on my treadmill!

And within those 5 minutes I also decided to keep on keepin on with the vegan. After all, it had only been 5 days. Yes, I was STARVING, but maybe it’s not the vegan eating. Maybe it’s something else. Maybe it’s because I’m starting to workout more. Maybe it will get better.

Got on the treadmill still expecting the worst. But I laced up my boots shoes, tight this time, and thought maybe, just maybe the problems with my toe rubbing were because I hadn’t laced up my shoes tight enough to begin with and my foot had been slipping around (user error?). I still wasn’t feeling like running, even though I was all dressed for it. But I decided to get around to watching that movie Kinky Boots that people had been telling me about. Well, I had friends who saw Kinky Boots the musical on Broadway and they loved it. But the film is on Netflix right now and maybe it’s this weird psychological draw because of my shoe problems but I ended up watching this movie about shoes! And it was great! The movie AND the shoes were great, which is a way better evening than I expected.

No rubbing whatsoever in the Brooks Adrenaline now that I’ve tightened them. The size seems right and the fit is good. There was also no rubbing at the arch/heel point either like with the new model Asics GT’s. And I guess what I’m saying is I’m keeping the Brooks for now. And I’m really hopeful that they’ll work out.

I definitely didn’t see the night ending on a high note like this, but I’m so thankful! Thankful the shoes might work out. Thankful I didn’t quit my vegan challenge on a bad day. Thankful my husband overlooks snarky comments when he knows it’s just me so frustrated with my running (and vegan challenges).

What shoes do you run in? Are your run shoes perfect for you or are there still kinks you wish weren’t there?

  1. It’s so funny how your whole perspective on something can change in like an hour. I do that kind of stuff all the time. One minute the whole world is against me and then a few moments later I can’t even remember what I was upset about. I hear you on the shoes. I have tried Nike three times, and three times they have been terrible. The ones I have now are way to narrow and pinch, but I’m going to continue to wear them anyway.

    • Definitely not my best “runner moment” I’m afraid. 😦 But it’s so hard not to have the run shoe thing worked out! Because everything else with running is already so hard, you want to be able to throw money at some shoes and have that be the EASY part! Have you tried all the other run shoe brands? I tried on 8 brands and 12 different shoes in my quest for these Brooks.

  2. Kinky Boots is a great movie! My shoes and my arches aren’t getting along very well right now. It might be my fault though- my feet have a tendency to change sizes. And I don’t mean swelling. I have shoes ranging from 8 to 10.5 in my closet. They all get worn. I hope the shoes continue to work out!

    • Thanks! And glad you liked the movie too! That’s strange that all your shoes run different sizes. But if you find the shoes that works for you, that’s all that matters! I told my husband that if these Brooks work out like they seem to be, I’m not getting another pair of run shoes until I run another 4 marathons! No more of this “every 300 – 500 miles” thing! I don’t care how many miles are on them. I’m not going through this again (for a while) if I can help it!

  3. I finally got fitted for shoes this summer and learned I was running in a size too small. I mean, they felt fine, but I was losing toe nails. So clearly, they were too small for running. 🙈 I have flat feet, so after trying on a bajillion pairs, I settled on the Nike Zoom Structure 18. I didn’t like them at first, but gave them a chance. 20 miles later, all toenails intact, and I loved them! I’m approaching 300 miles on them and figured I should look into another pair. Wrong. I can’t find them in my giant 10.5 size. 😩 Next time, I’m sticking up.

    • So frustrating!!! I feel the same about the old GT’s I had. I looked everywhere for them to just buy them again but of course there aren’t any of more of my size. I’m hoping my Brooks work out like your Nikes. Funny how we judge shoes these days by the absence of problems. And I had the same problem with sizing that you did. I think I was running in a size too small before. It’s so easy to overthink all the variables and wonder if you’re doing anything right with your shoe choices!
