Shalane And The Turkey Sandwich: How A Pro Eats

Let me start out by saying that I don’t have a lot of info to go on here. Just a blip from a Runner’s World Magazine article. Shalane Flanagan and Kara Goucher were interviewed for their upcoming Boston run and it made mention that Shalane did this killer workout, 5 minute miles or something, for a 14 mile set, and then went in for lunch:  a turkey sandwich.

This goes along with what I was saying a while back about Meb. These guys eat so sparingly! I have been trying to put this into practice lately with my run training. Even though I’m right smack in the middle of the “healthy” range for my height and weight, I’m still 10-15 lbs heavier than when I was at my running best. But it’s hard to wrap your head around the fact that you are logging 10 mile runs and yet you have to keep your calorie count so low. I convince myself that that’s wrong, even as the scale isn’t budging for me, and then I read about Shalane or Meb having a piece of fish or a turkey sandwich after a long run at world record speeds. Jeez guys. I knew they were amazing runners but I’m more impressed at their austere eating habits than the fact that they are olympic medal runners.

My last run was proof that you don’t have to carbo load before or after to do long distances. Proof to myself that is. It’s going to be interesting to see if this speeds up my next 10 lb weight loss. I’m planning on upping my runs to 4x a week, maybe for a total of around 28 mile. It’s going to be trial and error, which is so annoying. Wish I could get stuck in an elevator with Jerry Schumacher and pick his brain a little on all of this. Getting really tiresome to just go off pieces of nutritional advice from generic publications.
