When Did I Become A Race Medal Junkie?

Before I did it for the experience. Now I’m like, “What does the medal look like? Ehhh…. it’s alright.”

So I gotta ask – When did I become a race medal junkie? I only do it now if the medal is right. I kinda only realized this tonight when I was looking for pictures of the Chicago Marathon medal and, upon seeing it, thought to myself that it was kind of a boring medal and maybe it wasn’t worth it. One second later though I snapped out of it and reminded myself that it was CHICAGO and that, even if they gave you a furry, bunny rabbit paw key chain instead of a medal, it would STILL be worth it!

When did I get so medal focused? I blame Florida. Every race here has a twirly crazy elaborate medal that weighs a pound and that shoots fireworks. You start getting used to that nonsense. Do a couple Disney races and you really lose perspective. But back in the day I would do races like the Bataan Death March Marathon and they slap a small coin in your hand when you cross the finish line after a brutal course and they remind you that you’re there to honor fallen soldiers and prisoners of war. And you know what? I was grateful and proud. Now I’m like, “UH! Where the hell is my shinning whizzing twirly sound-bite medal?!!!”

Early New Years resolution –  Do races for the experiences, not the medals.
